Very Efficient
This Bachmann Ballast Spreader was very easy to use while distributing the ballast pretty evenly and very efficiently. A practice run is not necessary, but it helps to get an idea how fast the ballast is distributed.

quick and easy
The spreader works great, fast and easy. Have to use right amount of ballast towards the end of the line because it's free flow no shut off. Used it slow and easy on Bachmann Easy Track.

Makes ballasting N scale track easy
Very easy to use, dispenses perfect amount of ballast very quickly. Would be helpful to have a valve to stop flow of ballast.

Easier to manually spread ballast
I found its performance lacking. Most issues can be traced to the bottom plate. It dispensed too much ballast. The ties between the rails were covered. The sides had way to much ballast. I had to use a soft painting brush to remove the excess. This was so much work, that it was easier to apply the ballast with a spoon and use the same brush. The issue with the sides may be a result of how I lay track. I mount the track raised by tabs of double stick foam tape. Then, I fasten the track in place by flooding the ballast with matte medium thinned by a water and alcohol mix. But that doesn’t explain the coverage between the rails. The bottom plate of the spreader should have slots for the rails cut deeper. The spreader plate should be thinner at the front and the back edge should be rounded. This will allow the back edge to ride right on the ties and clear ballast from the ties. Otherwise, the construction is clean and stable. It just didn’t help me apply my N scale ballast.

3 feet and quit
I bought this with hopes of making ballasting easier. It didn't. Puts down way more ballast than needed. I spent more time removing excess ballast than I would have spent spreading ballast with a small spoon. Needless to say this thing will be sitting on a shelf collecting dust and the spoon will go back into service
