Fantastic rocket that has somewhat of a mind of its own once it leaves the launchpad.
Rocket flies fantastic but it does appear to have somewhat of a mind of its own! My launch system is for the smaller rockets so this one although it fits kind of goes in any direction once it leaves the launch rod but it flies wonderfully! Has lots of space for painting, my grandson went for the Van Gogh Starry Night theme. ????

Warning - this is the perfect rocket.
I built LOTS of Estes rockets when I was a kid about 30 years ago. Then my son found a survivor of my former fleet in my parents' attic and, next thing ya know, we're building every kit we can get our hands on. This kit, however, is a stand-out. Built like high-power rockets, with a slotted body tube for "through-the-wall" fin mounting, if the parachute comes out at all, it'll survive. It's nearly impossible to screw up the fins, so it'll fly straight and true for even first-time builders. It's short and fat, so you won't easily lose sight of it in the sky. There's lots of surface area that begs to be decorated creatively. BD1 was a rainbow spray fade. BD2 (pic 1 below) is painted like a V2. My son painted BD3 (pic 2) like a Torgue weapon from Borderlands. It's really the perfect low-power rocket. But, as I always tell my son, "When it comes to rockets, bigger is always better." So, having built 3 of these, we were compelled to move up to an Aerotech Sumo. More or less the same construction, just MUCH bigger. And now, having officially caught the high power rocketry flu, we just got a LOC Precision Warlock which we will be flying at LDRS-34 on an H or I motor. Google Image THAT thing. So here's the warning suggested by the title of this review: the Estes Big Daddy is kinda like a gateway drug to a much more expensive (but awesome) habit. IMPORTANT TIP: the launch lug that comes with this rocket is for a 3/16" rod. Most (beginner) launch pads come with a 1/8" rod. If you try to launch this on the thinner rod, it'll take a wicked 45 degree turn shortly after lift-off (known in the biz as "rod whip") and you'll either lose it in the trees (how we lost BD1, sadly) or have to walk a LONG WAY (what happened last time we launched BD2). So either buy the thicker rod or make smaller diameter lugs out of a small piece of card stock or construction paper rolled in a piece of masking tape.

Best E-Engine Rocket
Big Daddy is, as Estes says, a head-turner. It looks great and flies better. Durability is amazing. Building it takes some time-- do take your time. The joints have to be strong in order to withstand E engine power. Don't use Elmer's school glue, use proper wood glue. Finishing can be simple or difficult. Achieving the look as Estes shows is challenging, but a red body and a black nose look great as well, and that's much easier to do. My only complaint about this rocket is the decals. They are not hard to put on. Rather, Estes was lazy with the fin decals. There are enough fin decals for one side of 2 fins. I find that pathetic. Flying this rocket is great. I recommend starting with a D12-3 engine and then graduating to an E9-6. It flies high, and is easy to recover. It is probably the most reliable rocket I have. Once, the parachute lines were too tangled top open (I didn't bother untangling them) and it free-fell some 600 feet onto concrete. Nothing happened but a mild fin crack, which I can't even notice after some superglue. One thing for when you launch: use a LOT of recovery wadding. Because of the size of the engine tube and nose cone, the parachute is pushed right up against the engine tube. It will melt if you don't have enough!

Check package for damaged parts
This is a great rocket in the Estes large rocket line. My problem after opening I in damaged shipping box, the rocket kit looked fine. Once opened and I had already cut out guns etc, I went to build engine tube assembly and the engine tube was bent almost flat. In 45 years of building I am trying my best to reshape and make it work. Not an easy task. I would return for another but have already ordered another new rocket and need to wait Once built it should be great as long as I can get engine in it. Would have been an easy, nice large rocket if not for that one critical part being damaged. I would give it 5 stars if not for this one part.

Fun kit to build - maybe more advanced than the smaller/entry rockets.
This is a good kit... It needs a big motor to launch, so maybe start with some smaller rockets to get used to how rockets are assembled and flown, and then step up to this big boy. It's one of the entry rockets into mid-power/high-power rocketry as there's a few good aftermarket upgrades to this kit with fiberglass fins/reinforced motor mounts etc to allow higher power/higher flights. Out of the box, it's still a fun rocket... but it is one of the few kits that really are a stepping stone into the world of higher power flight. My only complaint is Amazon packaging is not adequate for delicate model rockets... they ship them in a plastic bag vs in a box sometimes. It's hit and miss.. you may end up with damaged parts.

A great, easy build slow takeoff rocket
I mainly bought this rocket because it had a lot of surface area for me to do some creative painting on. I've also seen them fly at my club and I liked the slow takeoff when flown on a D motor. All model rocket enthusiasts should have one of these in their arsenal. My only modification is that instead of using the paper shock cord attachment ( I hate those) I used about two feet of kevlar braided cord attached to the motor mount. I attached some elastic shock cord to that to give it a little flex before attaching to the nose cone. Pad the kevlar by wrapping a little duck tape around it where the kevlar meets the end of the rocket to avoid "zippering". This rocket flies great!
