Lovely art set for kids. Fun, educational, and a great value!
This is a fantastic art kit for children ages 6+. It includes everything you need to draw rainbows, or whatever else you want using the five included pre-sharpened Faber-Castell watercolor pencils and a paintbrush. There's a 4"x6" spiral bound watercolor paper pad with 20 sheets of a medium-weight textured paper. Watercolor pencils are a great art activity for kids because it's not messy and allows for a lot of variety of expression. You draw with the pencils and then brush water over the drawing and the pencil ink becomes watercolor paint! The names of the five watercolor pencils included are (I found these names by doing some online research, they aren't named in this set, only numbered - you're welcome!): #407 - Lemon #414 - Dark Orange #425 - Dark Magenta #454 - Aquamarine #466 - Grass Green I like that the colors are not all the obvious primary or secondary colors; the aquamarine and magenta are interesting and allow for a bit of creativity in how you mix the colors to make a rainbow. There's a foldout guide included that's very helpful. It's written in a simple style so kids can understand it and it explains what watercolor pencils are, how they work, how to mix colors, and how to try various techniques. These kinds of leaflets included in sets like these aren't usually very good but I was impressed with this one. Considering you get 5 top quality Faber-Castell watercolor pencils, a 20-sheet watercolor paper pad, and more, this art set is an excellent value at only $8.99 and I would highly recommend it! it would make a very nice gift. My eight-year-old is using it as I write this and is loving it. The pencils are made in Indonesia from certified sustainable wood, and the rest of the set is made in China.

Good starter set, terrible brush
My son just turned 5. Last year, when his older brother was doing virtual school from home, he was completely obsessed with his brother's art class, where they spent several weeks learning different water painting techniques. Because he was just little then, he got really frustrated that he wasn't able to get the same definition his brother could as he tried to follow along. The issue was really two things: the paint wasn't highly pigmented and he was using too much water. So his attempts always just ended up blending into a disappointing, soggy brown. I was excited for him try water painting again with this kit, which I hoped would give him better results. Oh, my goodness, what a difference! He really loved that, with these pencils, he was able to draw precisely where he wanted the color to go. And I showed him how to only use a little bit of water, and different sized brushes, to control exactly where the color went and how bold or washed out it was. This was such a fun experience for him! I agree with some of the other reviewers on two points: don't even bother with the included brush, and it would be nice if there were more colors included. The brush wasn't a big deal in my house because we have lots, but if you don't, you may well be disappointed in the one that is included here. Color-wise, I think it's a decent starter variety, but for my kid, who is hyper-focused on realism in certain cases, he had a hard time with the fact that the color selection was limited. Regardless, I think this little kit gives an excellent introduction to watercolors in a very accessible and easy-to-use format. Especially for younger kids who are maybe less forgiving when things don't work out how they "should" with regular water colors. The pencils give them more control. Overall, we're pretty happy with this set, aside from the brush. I recommend it for a new spin on a kid favorite.

Eh...not that great
I guess this watercolor kit isn’t too expensive, but it’s a little disappointing. The colors are nice, but why call it “How to Rainbow” when you can’t create an accurately colored rainbow from the colors included? You don’t even have two primary colors! The blue is a light, robin’s egg color, and you have magenta instead of red. Again, the colors are nice, but I would have liked to have had a true, deep blue and red. Then we could have created unlimited colors…and a real rainbow. And I was disappointed with the “magic” effect of turning the colored pencil etchings into water colors. You have to go back over and over and over again to get enough water on the page to dissolve the pencil marks. This is a frustrating process. And the colored pencils don’t seem all that pigmented to me. Until you drench them in water and get them to dissolve a bit, they color like any set of cheap colored pencils. The pad of paper is okay. One side of each sheet is fairly rough, and the other side smoother. The pages are *not* perforated for easy removal. Overall, the kit is okay, but including all the primary colors, providing a better brush, and perforating the pages would have really improved the kit.

More precise color application. Same mess/clean up
This is an interesting little kit. The watercolor pencils are easy to use. They deposit a rich pigment on the paper, and they allow for more precise application than a traditional watercolor paint set. The brush included is fine tipped, but you can use other sizes and types of brushes with these pencils. The paper pad is small, but it's a nice quality paper. The size is good for children. As far as the mess factor, I found this kit was only marginally less messy than regular watercolors. I still have to lay out newspaper, and have towels handy to mop up spills and splashes. My child might be extra messy, but this is also the nature of this set. So unless you have an older child who can clean up by themselves, you still need to be available for this activity. All in all, it's a nice little kit. I'd be interested in purchasing more colors and larger sized paper to complement this set.
