Big therapy value and cracks me up
The media could not be loaded. I've played around with this hippo a good deal and the 30+ reactions seem to be there but they're all really subtle. I think that actually works in its favor though for consistant personally. Sadly, the hippo is completely unresponsive to the watermelon slice, but it's still a cute pretend play food. Getting the mouth open requires a little work but the jaw does open. I do think it's really cute though. The sound is clear and the volume isn't TOO, too loud. The voice is silly but I don't find it annoying. I like that it has more of a fun voice with a personality as opposed to entirely hardcore hippo sounds. TOTALLY a fun toy for kids and it would honestly make a great gag gift for adults because this thing cracks me up, it's super entertaining. It also has beautiful developmental therapy potential, which I'll get to. The skin is kind of gnarly and the stitch work on the seams is awful but the anamatronics make up for it AND it does look like legit hippo skin if you don't take the seams into account. The little dudette is sturdy but lacks in cuddleability. It's very stiff and I would not recommend picking it up by a leg because all the weight is primarily in the body and the legs don't seem strong enough on their own to tolerate supporting the rest of the body weight by those joints. It also has virtually no padding/stuffing under the skin and you can knock on it and hear the knocking clearly of the plastic body. I'm not sure how it would hold up to a fall on a hard surface or being whipped around by a younger kid playing less than mindfully with it. It came with 4 AA batteries pre-installed. You need a screwdriver to open the latch to the battery compartment. The on/off switch is in an awkward spot you need to do a bit of skin moving (it's not a very flexible fabric) to reach. It walks well though! It has a button on its back that's easy to press which triggers the movement. No issues with button functionality. Honestly I think it's perfect for teaching cause and effect play because it's so simple and easy to press the button and it's extremely responsive. If, on that note, you're looking for a toy that gives a short burst of reinforcement right away and stops in a few seconds on it's own this is an EXCELLENT toy. Sometimes it moves a bit longer than other times but generally the active movement times are pretty short. If you don't press the button for about 20 seconds it goes into a sleep mode. Press the button again and it moves again. It's supposed to "slip and fall" less the more you press the button in a play period and it definately follows through! I think that's also really cute. It's a fun toy and it's a nice medium size. If the watermelon function worked I would give Sally 5 stars, but that's my only major reason not to. That being said, the hippo I recieved, I would value is about $30.
