General vs Derwent
I've used these General's pencils and the comparable Derwent water-soluble graphite pencils. The Derwent pencils come in three shades (light, medium and dark) but these General pencils are capable of the same range but have greater depth and darkness than the Derwent. However, because the General pencil can be so dark it is a little bit harder to control than the Derwent. When I go out to draw and I only have space for a few things, I choose the Derwent Light and the General pencil -- and they work really well together. But if I had to choose just one, it'd be General because of the range. With either, it will erase so-so when its dry but not at all once it's been activated. Due to it being a little bit harder of a pencil, the Derwent holds a better point. General is a little bit more expensive per pencil (at the time of this review, the General are about 20c more per pencil than the Derwent) and with them being a bit softer they do go by a little faster than the Derwent. I'm not associated with General or Derwent and definitely did not receive any products for free.

Excellent quality water soluble pencils
Generals is usually a medium quality brand for art supplies, but these are about the best water-soluble graphite I've come across. They are very dark which means you can go lighter with lighter application of the pencil. Other brands of this type are lighter in tone and then you can't go darker. These are also more affordable than more highly touted brands.

GREAT sketching pencil!
I've really enjoyed using this pencil for sketching. It's a soft lead. After you sketch you take a water brush to dissolve the lead and you end up with a gray scaled drawing. You can add more lead over a wet area. At that point you can lay watercolor paint over it - or not. Check out Tom Lynch's youtube on the sketch and wash pencil.
