Virtual Train Set
My autistic son is nuts about anything to do with railways and I've bought him many DVD's and computer software programmes associated with the railway theme. Being a long term supporter of the Hornby label and owning the orginal Hornby Virtual Railway software, I guess I was expecting something rather more advanced than what was available in this updated version. There are several other, more progressive model train simulators around than this one, but if you're looking for a basic guide to setting up a model railway from scratch, then this software is for you. (I guess I can't complain, as I bought this software 2nd hand from E-Bay, so it was considerably cheaper than its original price.)

No good for planning layouts.
This product is not user friendly or intuitive to use. If you're looking for something to plan your new Hornby layout I would recommend you buy EasyRail5.

Not bad
I now have two of these, the Hornby vr2 and the Model Railway deluxe. Both installed and worked correctly without any problems. Both are good and I have had no problems with them. Each has their own way of constructing the board layout. The construction methods take a bit of getting used to but once mastered things are quite simple. A simulator is simply a "working" visual representation of an actual board layout but probably at a fraction of the cost. Where due to a variety of circumstances you are unable to build an actual board layout, then a visual simulation is probably the answer. The most difficult part of both simulator's is trying to get the tracks to line up so every works as it should. With the railway deluxe it is more of a scientific layout, Hornbies is more of hobby type. Railway deluxe uses a form of select, drag and drop. Where as Hornby uses a sort of drawing board. There are video presentations of both of these on utube. Having paid only about £6 (for railway deluxe new) and to £7 (for Hornby used) I think they are excellent value for money. Basically if you have had a hard day at work these simulations are an excellent way to unwind, relax and have some fun. I thought I might just slightly amend this review. Having had this HVR2 for some weeks now I needed to contact Hornby customer support because I had problems joining tracks up. Obviously when you start to lay track at some stage of the process you will have two track ends to connect up. Some times they do and some times they don't. Hornby advises that this is called "track geometry" and it is not 100% perfect. Thus when it does connect up you have mastered "track geometry" (so Yippie take a brownie point) . When it does not (oops) you have a problem to sort out. Hornby suggests you need what they call "flexi track" which some times works and sometimes doesn't. With flexi track you sometimes end up with kicks in the line which leads to camera shake when the camera is mounted to the engine. I paid about £7 for this as a used version. I am not sure if I would buy this new as Hornby confirm that this software is about ten years old and thus needs a patch with newer operating systems. I presently have several layouts constructed both with this and railway deluxe. Maybe I should get a life, but beats the rubbish on the box!. Static display is limited to a few railway buildings and some trees, whilst other's contain a variety of building's, vehicles and people. If for what ever reason (space etc) constructing an actual board layout is not an option , then these train simulators are in my opinion a viable alternative. And would almost certainly be a suitable gift for a younger relative. Whether you will be satisfied or disappointed will depend on what your expectations are. Personally I think they are great but that's just my opinion. Either way if you want lots of fun both building and operating them.
