Excellent learning experience, outstanding instructions, great starting point
Excellent learning kit and fun build too. What you're really buying here are the build instructions amenable to a first- timer and they are really outstanding - fully detailed, readable, and you learn boat building along the way. Cannot go wrong here as a starting point.

Follow the plans
Fun build. This is my 3rd Midwest kit and it’s I great little kit. Good parts and plenty of wood if you use it sparingly and use the plans to cut your pieces out properly it’ll come out good. The plans are great and lay everything out so you have a good idea how it’s built. Pretty simple build but had some challenges. FYI follow the plans and you have great success. I did build a custom stand different from the kit. More like slip dock for realistic look.

I built the Skiff
I built the skiff. I finiahed it and it looks good. The instructions were a masterpiece of clarity, they walked me step by step through the building process. It is a simple model yet everything has to be done right I am not particularly skilled so this is gratifying. After the Skiff experience, I went back to Midwest Products/Model Expo and ordered a Viking trading boat.

relearning a new, updated model shipbuilding experience.
I am retired, age 92, and wanted to have a new fun hobby. I constructed model boats as an early teen-ager, and choose to see if it was fun for an old-timer to pass some time away. So I purchased this model and recently completed the construction. It was fun doing, and filled the available time space adequately. It was to be a (re)learning experience to move up the difficulty range, ending with an 1800's man-of-war 3 masted battleship. I learned many things, specifically the drastic change in improvement of paint and glue. I have started a more difficult model, hoping to continue up the ladder ending with a "Queen of the Seven Seas" type display!!
