It's something for kids to think through, assemble, it's a light and it's a SHARK!! 10 out of 10!
Well, I bought this as a gift for a 7 year old and it must be FUN because he was thrilled with it. His parents had to help him put it together, but it didn't take long. It's great as decor and as a night light (so functional) and it was a great price (thanks Amazon!) I first saw these in a local gift shop but the shark was not available for purchase in my town; only other animals, so I was very happy to find it in stock here.

Impressive Blue Glowing Shark and A Project to Build
Saw this at a toy show and bought one to build. The directions are drawings-only, so like Lego instructions. I will say that the instructions took a little time to understand, but once you do it went relatively smoothly. The pieces come in sheets – I recommend you punch out all the pieces and then sort them by color and shape. There are cross connector pieces and square body pieces, plus some specialty pieces. The connector and body pieces are green or blue. The one thing I noticed after forming the first composite piece was that the two sides of each piece are different – one side is smooth and the other textured. I’m not sure if it makes a difference in the end, but I decided to have the textured side always facing out – I think it looks better in the light. Pushing the connector pieces into the body pieces took some doing (was worried about breaking them), but once you do a few it’s very easy. The ends of the connector pieces are slightly larger, so they lock into place. With enough tugging you can separate them, but they are designed to stay locked forever. Building the single composite pieces is simple but joining them to other composite pieces was tricky at first – in most cases you need to warp the shape (since you’re turning a flat composite piece into a three dimensional shark). I was concerned something might snap, but once you realize they won’t it makes the job much easier. From there you just continue to make flat composite pieces and then join them to the growing shark. I did get one small section upside-down but was able to pull it out and then reorient it. When you get to the end it’s a challenge to lock the last pieces into place (was worried about getting a plastic cut), but once it was done, the shark was very sturdy. Even had it fall once and nothing detached. The last thing is the lights. The instructions have a pathway for the lights, but I ignored that. It’s an (about) 100 light LED ropes with a USB connector (on a long cable). There is a circle exit point on the under side of the shark – I fed the USB end through that and looped it around the circle to keep the lights from coming out or the cable from going in. Then I stuffed the lights into the shark (which took a while – there are a lot of lights) and used the several small gaps in the shark to work the lights around into the fin, tale and head. The shark looks great in the light and even better in the dark when lit up! I think it took me 1-2 hours to build it and was definitely worth it. I think it is sturdy enough to be hung from a wire if you want it overhead. A lot of work, but worth it. Lastly, I did check out their online instruction videos and didn’t find them that helpful (no closeups of the tricky construction steps).

You Deserve an Honorary PhD in Engineering for For Completing This
I bought this to assemble with my daughter as a birthday gift. Holy crap...I like to think I can read any set of instructions and figure it out, but this set of instructions was like a hard kick to the jewels. I must have sat there for nearly an hour just to do the first 4 steps. I finally gave up seeing there was a YouTube video. So I went cheat with the YouTube video, but the demonstrator goes light speed so darn fast I couldn't make it out. I literally kept constantly stopping and replaying the video from the last 15 seconds or so. I grabbed my MacBook, set highest video quality, set the playback speed to .25x, and finally started making some progress. I still found myself stopping, rewinding, and playing again, but at least I finally got it done. It really took me almost 5 hours. Another warning...I kept looking at the video timer wondering at what point the lights enter into this crazy fray... You complete the darn thing feeling you just summited Mt Everest only to discover you have to start taking it apart again to get the lights installed! I was like screw this. I just wrapped the lights around the unicorn. I totally deserve a Honorary PhD in Engineering for even getting the other stuff done. It's a neat unicorn and I wish kids could value your labor hours towards completion, but there's no way they can do it on their own in my opinion.

A JAWSOME Gift!
My 11 year old and I spent about 4 hours putting it together and running the lights. Had to use clear tape on 2 pieces that kept popping out of place. Got a little frustrated when piecing together the larger halves because of that. Can get a little tricky in places. Used a crochet hook to help pull the lights in and through to the edges for even light distribution. Thinking of hanging it from the ceiling. Bigger than I expected, but also way cuter. Gave us a great way to bond over her love of sharks. Would recommend to anyone looking for a reward after completing a puzzly gift. My birthday girl is in love, and that's all I could hope for.

Nightmare to assemble, but pretty in the dark
I bought this after a search for best gift for a nine year old girl. My granddaughter was happy to receive it, but once we began to assemble it "together", it became quickly apparent that it was not easy to assemble and certainly not within a 9 year old's ability. I'm quite skilled with fine motor and visual tasks, but I needed both the included picture directions and the You Tube video (pausing it every few seconds, due to the speed at which the assembler was demonstrating, as well as rewinding to see what exactly she had done) to figure it out, making many missteps. Imagine my dismay when, after taking hours to get it together, the video showed having to break it apart to install the lighting. I even got lost putting it back together. It's not very attractive in daylight, but does make a great nightlight for a little girl. The box says "45 minutes to assemble". It took 20 to separate all of the pieces. The birds eye view on the video was helpful, but I never had a good view from the top, which is where I got caught up. Were I given the chance to do this over, I would not have purchased this.

Fun project that isnt easy but fun and challenging.
My 9 year old son loved making the shark! I loved that it was something different than your traditional lego building and had some challenge factor but still a fun factor. My son didnt have any problem reading and understanding the instructions. The finished product was much bigger than I anticipated so a def. win for us! Would recommend.
