Merrill's Marauders
On 7 December 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, the main US base in the Pacific and this action brought America into the war and made it a truly world war. Now that American naval power in the Pacific had been greatly reduced the Japanese army attacked and occupied the Phillipines, other islands in the Pacific and defeated the American army. They also invaded several countries in south east Asia and defeated the British and Commonwealth troops in Singapore, Malaya and Burma and pushed them back relentlessly eastwards towards India. A number of special forces including the British Chindits and the American Merrill's Marauders were infiltrated behind enemy lines to attack them and set up bases from which they could disrupt the operations of the Japanese army. Both groups worked in the most difficult conditions experienced by any army throughout the war, where they had to hack their way through hundreds of miles of thick jungle, climb high mountains, ford huge rivers and cope with a multitude of tropical diseases at the same time as fighting a highly skilled, determined and fanatical foe. Jeff Chandler in one of his later roles is excellent as Merrill and Samuel Fuller, the director, tries hard to convey the true extent of the monumental difficulties faced by Merrill's forces in such a difficult environment, although I'm sure that the actual Marauders would not have looked quite as well fed as the actors portraying them in the film but this is unavoidable. Even allowing for the usual amount of American flagwaving it is still an impressive, stirring and well staged film and one that pays a highly deserved tribute to these courageous soldiers who despite all the ordeals they faced overcame them and eventually defeated the Japanese army and forced them to retreat westwards until their final defeat in 1945. It is a region 2 imported film (don't ask me why this has to be) so just ignore the foreign language on the packaging and delete the subtitles when you watch it and you will be fine.
