Love the kit, don’t love QR code sourcing to directions
This review is for the Yeabricks LED light kit for the Lego Italian Riviera set that is priced at $30.99 at the time of my review. TLDR Version, absolutely love it, but hate how you get the directions. You will need 3 AA batteries. There were 2.5 hours between when I started and when I finished, but I took a few breaks in between to eat lunch and stuff, so it took somewhere between 1.5-2 hours all together. This was the first lighting kit I’ve used, so there was a little bit of a learning curve. I am sure if you were super focused you could do it faster. When I opened the box I was extremely skeptical about this. In order to get the directions, you have to scan a QR code that takes you to a web page with a very lengthy list of model numbers, that then takes you to a Google drive to get two PDF files. The files look like printed instructions, so why not just provide them that way. This makes me worried about security and it also means I would have to save the PDF files if I want a reference. That in itself is enough to make me dock a star and it makes me less likely to buy from this brand again. I would happily pay a bit more to have paper directions or even a regular web site to go to. There were two packages labeled 1 and 2 but the directions don’t refer to those numbers at all. You just have to figure out which piece to use. They were a little tangled up so at first I thought I had missing pieces. This was kind of a recurring theme. Several times during the build I thought I had a problem, but it was generally when I was rushing and not being methodical - the electrical brick placed backwards so the lights didn’t go on upstairs, a center piece placed one row too far over so the wire was too short , etc. Once I got the hang of it, this was very easy to do. I recommend that you test after each stage to make sure the connections are all working and the lights go on. You will have to do a bit of light deconstruction on your model, but nothing too difficult. Usually the top few pieces in a row so that you can cover the exposed wire. There is one battery box and a Y shaped connector to plug the lighting kit from the left and right sides of the model into it. It’s essentially like two builds. When I got the first side completed I started to get really excited. I looks so cool! At that point I was very motivated to finish. I wish I were a better photographer to show you just how nice this looks. I think the photos on the product page are a good representation. This just takes your Lego build up a notch and looks amazing. If not for the funky direction situation I would definitely give this a 5 star review. I have a completed Notre Dame set and I’m probably going to get the light kit for that too now that I know it’s not too hard and it looks so good. NB you will have a handful of original pieces left over after you replace them with lighting kit pieces.
